I'd rather hold off on the change.  When I wrote the above, it was when the 
consensus seemed to support ditching one standard.  But now that my option 
c) seems to have some acceptance, we'll see what happens. :-)

Support is a pretty general term.  Would you want that support to come at 
the expense of SDI?

To arbitrarily reverse the option that KDE has had for a long time, in 
order to please some users whom you say have an acceptable alternative, 
doesn't seem right to me.
