The new XDG menus should make this actually less necessary since the .desktop 
files are more likely to stay in place (under $prefix/share/applications) 
since menu's can be rearranged without moving them. Unfortunately we will 
only be able to benefit from that once the transition phase has been 
completed, which can take a few years. (*.kdelnk files anyone?)
