KFind is a very good example for a separate app, which has good integration in 
konqueror. I am sure the same would be possible for KRename, too.

Sorry, I can't reproduce it, neither on KDE 3.1.1 nor on HEAD. Does it crash 
on all file plugins or only on a specific one?
