What I actually do is build RPMs so that my /usr/local doesn't get trashed.
After thinking about it a little I will try to automate it somewhat
so that the RPMs build out of cron every night and do all of them in
parrallel to make use of all of my CPUs.  I suppose I could use
your suggestion and just do cvs updates, then tar it up, and then
build the RPM.  That should give me more time to test instead of
just building all the time.
