To me the session manager (ksmserver) manages the application within a session
and the login manager (kdm) manages the sessions running on a computer.

You can change session _state_ within a running session during runtime using
Matthias Ettrich's new code for ksmserver if the GUI is there, you can also
change to a completely new session using Oswald's new code in KDM.

Shouldn't be too hard to explain I'd say.
