In Bug#50340 also someone reported the same problem and said it went again 
away after restarting KDE.

Maybe updating again helps?

Is there still a progress bar in the status bar? Does clicking the cancel 
button there restore normal behaviour?

Could you watch with a network traffic monitor like ethereal, what is going on 
on the network and possible KMail is waiting for a reply from the server?
