Therefore you _are_ going to readd the cr* icons, since that's the proven best
solution!
No duplication, no bugs, whichever icon theme the user selects, no speed penalty.
Why are you being so obtuse? There is no single argument remaining against
this solution, and yet you insist on doing its opposite.
