I don't like having the various types in there. I suspect that the semantics 
differ strongly depending on the type. E.g. hostname(normalHostname) returns 
a well defined string that you expect to identificate the host among a local 
network, but I have no idea what hostname(canonicName) would return or what 
it could be used for and why I would want to use that instead of 
hostname(fullyQualifiedHostname).
