Nothing is ever _easy_.

The best solution would be to get the authors of both packages to agree on the
differences.  Easier said then done, and certainly a lot of work for the people
who just want to code.
But working in a group is never easy, in the end it is a whole lot more fun!

I am not claiming to have all the answers; but I do know that working together
is a whole lot more efficient then competing on the same kind of software, even
if you have to take a whole lot of time to grow to the same end goal.
