it's supposed to be set by the process which sets the identity (login,
?dm, su). anyway, there is a second variable with the same meaning:
$USER. as usual, one is from sysv, the other from bsd. linux su sets
only $USER ... so on sysv-alikes, $USER should be given precedence.
