My point is that if am_edit breaks a valid Makefile.{in,am} (with valid 
== works as described when using plain auto{conf,make}), then that is a 
bug in am_edit, since

In this case, the hope didn't help. Saying it's not supported didn't 
help, either. A patch'd help. Even if my attempt at a fix is not 
acceptable, at least we now know where the problem lies so the am_edit 
maintainer can fix it ;-)
