JFYI, KMail now support S/MIME through a plugin. For more information:

About KMail and Evolution and Mozilla not being compatible. They are 
compatible ... through IMAP. What you suggest is exactly what IMAP 
provides, i. e. separation of user interface (== mail client) and data 
(== email messages). Compatibility of addressbooks is achieved by using 
LDAP. Basically the only way to achieve interchangebility is the usage 
of servers (IMAP, LDAP, the groupware server which is part of the 
Kroupware project).
