arts latency

We've received a couple of bug reports complaining about arts latency 
(reproducable - try running tuxracer, even at the lowest buffer size, 
there's almost a second delay between eating a herring and hearing the 
sound).

I'm not too familiar with arts (who needs sound anyway ;) ) - is there any 
sane way to fix/work around this?
