Ok, this was just my ignorance then.  I didn't think that you could add 
methods to public classes and have it stay BC.

Right, and I agree that your patch is a better general solution.  What I was 
trying to say is that if we can use your patch (i.e. it will stay BC) then we 
don't need my patch.

So, what I'm really saying is that I think it looks good.  :-)
