That's a really good idea -- I don't think it would be too pushy or anything. Have it by default on the desktop, with a nice don't show again button.

For Krita, I solved that by following the lead of blender, and converting the splash into a real window when the application has loaded. I do see returns in terms of donations after adding that splash. It won't work for every application, though.

As for the about box... I don't think that would be very effective. Most people don't check it. A donate now link in the help menu might work better. Even better, though, would be a support KDE button in the toolbar, maybe in the right-most position.
