I think it would benefit all the desktop projects relating to speech 
output and accessibility if we can agree on a common back-end API, even 
if the 'client-side' service APIs are desktop or project-dependent (i.e. 
kttsd, gnome-speech, etc. etc.).  I'd like to see our code sharing as 
much of the driver code as possible.

Indexing, or at least "end of speech" notification support, is turning 
out to be essential for good accessibility support, so I do not think we 
can afford to ignore this issue even in the beginning.
