This bug became a major problem for me with the recent glut of Windows worms.  Since I filter all mail through SpamAssassin, sometimes KMail would block for an hour or more when retrieving several days' worth of new mail.

For those suffering a similar problem, I've found that a workaround is to use fetchmail and procmail to pre-fetch and spam-assassinate mail for KMail to pick up from a local mail folder in /var/spool/mail.  This way KMail can retrieve mail as it's filtered rather than in one huge blocking operation.
