I agree that Tux in a plane is *the* symbol for GCompris. The colour 
(orangy yellow) is also important, IMHO.

But I would very much welcome an *improved* version. The best thing 
would be two versions, one that works well at smaller sizes (as an icon) 
and a (still simple but) more detailed one, for larger sizes.

Note that the icon/mascot/logo has changed several times already, 
keeping the general design (Tux in a yellow plane):
