There is a nice principle in UI design of using actions/verbs as button
names, as they are much more user friendly. For example, don’t have a
dialogue like this (e.g., when quitting an editor):
The file %1 contains unsaved changes. Do you want to overwrite the
existing file with the changes?
Yes | No
This forces the user to use too much effort in parsing the message and
relating ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ to the text (which is especially time-consuming
if the explanatory text is long). (This is especially confusing when
sometimes ‘Yes’ means to overwrite a file, while in other applications
it means to quit without saving any unsaved changes.)
Instead, have buttons *say what they do*:
Overwrite file | Ignore changes
Another exmple:
Do you want to quit GCompris?
Yes | No
This is better:
Do you want to quit GCompris?
Quit GCompris | Keep playing
It is also possible to *add* ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ to the button names (‘Yes,
quit GCompris’), but it is both unnecessary and makes the implied
actions slightly harder to parse, so I do not recommend it.
