If you don't pass -d, which the OP is doing:

| -d     Do not run dpkg-checkbuilddeps to check build dependencies.

I use that too, but in this case this command will install the 
dependencies of the Debian gcompris package, not those of my package 
(they mostly overlap, but not completely).
