but dpkg-buildpackage should have given the list of the needed package, 
including dpatch.
In debian, when i want to compile myself a package, i use apt-get 
build-dep to make sure all the dependancies are installed.

"dpkg-source -x file.dsc" extracts the tar.gz and applies the patch, 
after md5sum checking all is ok. Just need the .dsc, the diff.gz, and 
the tar.gz.

debian packaging comes with very cool tools.
