The kernel version doesn't matter.

What does that mean?  By default, the binary should have been
installed at /usr/local/bin/gcompris.  Typing `gcompris' in a terminal
should start the application, generate the database, etc, etc.

Or you start it, but something goes wrong?  Please post the exact
output.

This is unrelated problem with your system.
