Hi,

I see you are using debian stable. Maybe you can periodically make
gcompris deb packages for debian stable?

there is backporting project for this - www.backports.org

It's simple - just add deb-src source from debian unstable distribution in
/etc/apt/sources.list, then do apt-get update and then:

apt-get -b build-dep gcompris

dpkg-buildpackage command could be usefull if you wanna compile and make deb
package from unpacked sources.

If you miss some build-dependancies simply find needed package in
www.backports.org or www.apt-get.org or make deb package by yourself. I
already made libassetml and python-gtk2 (it seems, that python-gnome2 isn't
reguired for gcompris) deb packages - they are currently uploaded to
http://files.akl.lt/debian-linux/misc_packages/stable/games

If you make gcompris 4.1 deb packages please upload them (with libassetml
and other needed libraries) to www.backports.org project - then all debian
stable users can use newest gcompris.

Btw, you should simply user libao-dev, this is build-dep for gcompris.
