Also, if you end up with this error when loading the python plugin
within gcompris :

(gcompris:3129): Gnome-WARNING **: gnome-program.c:1185: cannot load
modules after program is initialized
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/local/lib/gcompris/python/pythontest.py", line 3, in ?
    import gnome.canvas
ImportError: No module named canvas
menu_start section=/

You have to install :
gnome-python-canvas
