Well, segfaults are often caused by data errors
That's why I asked you about modifying /etc/host in my first
reply to you on 29th Jan . . .

Shouldn't matter. I don't know what the maximum is,
but I just tried 1000 with no problem . . .

Hardly . . .
It's a 10 min problem (except we've been running at the speed
of (electronic) Pigeon post)

Try
cat your-old-hosts-file |hexdump -C
which will tell us what's really in it.
