When I run startkde I get a desktop . . .


Try running:-

         plasma-desktop

directly, at the xterm prompt.


When I run konqueror in the xterm session, I see

konqueror
dbus-launch --autolaunch
/bin/dbus-daemon
kdeinit4: kdeinit4 Running . . .
kdeinit4: klauncher
kdeinit4: kded4
kdeinit4: kio_trash
kdeinit4: kio_file

Everything except kio_trash stays running after I end
konqueror, so you should see them too, if they are
getting started.


Try running
         kdeinit4
 first, then
         konqueror ~
