The 3.1 client should work fine with 0.7.1 and older. I use nxclient 3.1.0-6 
on linux with a variety of freenx versions including 0.7.1 and going back to 
0.4.4 on an old FC3 box, though IIRC 0.4.4 did need a tweak to work with 2.x 
clients and above.
