I found the source of the failure. Rouven was pointing in the right direction.
What I overlooked was that after the Xorg transition in Ubuntu Breezy
the xauth utility is now at /usr/bin/. Changing that in node.conf got
me past this error

"Auth: WARNING! Protocol mismatch in the authentication data."

In combination with the font path parameter tht Rouven provided I am
back at my desktop.
