Holy snikies....I figured it out!
/usr/NX/etc/node.conf:
USER_X_STARTUP_SCRIPT=.xinitrc
DEFAULT_X_SESSION=/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
chmod 755 /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc (it wasn't
executable)
I was able to determine this by running
/usr/NX/bin/nxloadconfig --check
