Hi,
just a small development update:
FreeNX 0.5.0 will be available just through SVN.
The "stable" 0.4.x tree will be kept in CVS though.
0.5.0 changes:
- - I commited the Load Balancing support, if you can please test it in a "real"
world example.
nx-utils changes:
* There is a new tree in SVN called nx-utils where certain utilities and
patches will be collected.
* Added nxfish
- nxfish uses a secure (tm) FiSH-Server to share certain files from the
local harddisk. (Portforwarded via SSH/nxproxy/SOCKS)
- nxfish provides also the necessary patches against the KIO_FISH kioslave
in KDE 3.4.
* Added nxredir
- nxredir is useful to have seamless UNIX->UNIX printing _now_ and not just
after 0.5.0 is released.
nxredir basically are 64 lines of C code (with 15 lines of #includes), which
can redirect ports 631 and 139/445 to CUPS / SAMBA servers.
It does this based on environment variables.
to use this functionality now add the following to your .bashrc: (Or anything
else sourced at session startup)
export NXCUPS_PORT=8631
export NXSAMBA_PORT=$[$(echo $DISPLAY | cut -d: -f2 | cut -d. -f1)+7000]
export LD_PRELOAD="/usr/lib/libnxredir.so.0 $LD_PRELOAD"
Then forward your CUPS port via SSH (for example) (but just if its a trusted
server or your CUPSD is secured).
Possibilities this gives you for example:
- Open up a konqueror and go to: smb:/localhost/ to see and browse all your
shares comfortably.
- Just use kprinter and all your printers work.
- Preloading this library should not hurt in any case.
I would be especially interested in feedback if this works also on FreeBSD or
Solaris.
So far from the FreeNX Development department.
cu
