As Kurt alluded to in an earlier post, the NoMachine website is a very
valuable resource.  Not only they do have HOWTOs, but they also have a
viewable archive of their mailing list.  The same "8-bit color depth"
question was asked on their mailing list recently; here's the thread:

The short answer is that 8-bit is all that is possible right now.
