xdg-user-dirs is an application / executable, apparently. I don't get the
logic of checking for an executable at build-time in order to load a
translation catalogue from somewhere at runtime.

Does it? Why? How? (This means: not in my packaging, so what am I missing
because of that?)

Dave points out in the review that worst-case it will fall back to English, so
nothing will change for the user. So (back to my packaging case) no, no issue.
