digikam not starting on fedora 41

I have a system running fedora that I use for digikam. It's been running
well for years.
OS was horribly out of date plus I wanted some of the new dk features, so I
updated the OS.
All interim updates worked until I got to FC41. Now, when I launch digikam
(version 8.6 was pre-compiled on the FC distros), I get the splash screen
then it spits out an error "stack smashing detected".

Nothing useful in searches on this and other forums. ABRT indicates
something different, "pthread kill implementation". So...this may be an
FC41 issue as there are other apps reporting the same pthread error.

Tried renaming .config dir in case there were some incompatibilities.
strace doesn't tell me anything useful.
full un-install/re-install of dk (from the distros). Made a half-hearted
attempt to compile from source but I really don't have a proper development
enviro setup on this system. (plus I'm a little rusty in that dept).

I'm hoping someone has an idea to get it going again because I'm not
looking forward to re-installing the OS. Thanks.
