Automatic metadata reading from xmp files

I'm not on the computer where digikam is installed, but I checked 
yesterday and "Read from sidecar files" is ticked and greyed.

If it's ticked, Digikam should read metadata from xmp files 
automatically ? If it's correct, it doesn't work or I missed something.

I also have the "Sidecar names are compatible with commercial programs" 
option ticked because I used Lightroom and other programs in the past.

Maybe Digikam expects xmp files' name to the like this : 
filename.ext.xmp ?
