No direct equivalent, as digikam doesn't have virtual albums (afaik)

Oh? He's also rating the "non-picks"? In any case he would need a filter.

Tags might help, but he'll still have to apply a filter.
Or set up an advanced search, but that's not ideal if you have to do that for 
more albums...). And it still isn't accessible like a "normal" album.

In short, as digikam doesn't have virtual albums, what you want to do isn't 
possible in the way you describe it.
