very slow scan for new items (solved)

Maik's been spot on, the problem was a failing hard drive with fsck and 
smartcl throwing lots of errors at me. Luckily my back-ups where 
absolutely up to date for a change, though it looks like I might have 
salvaged most if not all from the failing one, digikam was the only 
program showing any issues yet.

Replaced drive, restored collection from back up, initial digikam start 
was bit slow searching for new entries but nothing compared to before, 
and now running through like a breeze. :-)

Thanks everybody for their input and thanks for all your efforts with 
this piece of great software.
