Ability to changing file attributes

Is there a means to change file attributes?

I have a portfolio of 500,000+ items, most of which have metadata and
almost all of them are read-only. I have a few family members who access
my archives as well as various applications. Some of them have read-only
access, while others on occasion are allowed to edit files. In addition,
my online backups have already accounted for the file attributes and
mass-changing the attributes will result in an entirely new library.

I prefer the Digikam over Bridge, but whenever I need to make a change to a
photo, I need to find the photo in Bridge or via file explorer. Bridge
allows me to lock and unlock a file or group of files and then quickly lock
them again. Since a tag can (and often do) span multiple folders, Digikam
shines in its ability to pull up photos across multiple folders.

For read-only files, Digikam will write to a sidecar, but some apps (such
as Synology Photos) don't read sidecars. On top of which, sidecars use the
filename to link to the original and as I go through my archives, in order
to provide better context (and facilitate tools which do not read tags), I
tend to rename files.

Could this be accomplished via some type of script?

Thanks!
