Issue with slow thumbnails in “Tags” view

Recently my system has developed an issue with VERY slow thumbnail generation in the “Tags” view. It can take several minutes to generate thumbnails for a category just a few dozen images; sometimes Digikam just seems to hang with only a few thumbnails visible.

By contrast, in “Albums” view the thumbnails are very fast, generating almost as quickly as I can scroll down. No issues there, but when I switch to Tags view the thumbnail generation slows to a crawl again. 

Issue is unaffected by magnification setting. I have refreshed the database (update path function) and rebuilt the thumbnails, but the issue persists. I do not use the face recognition feature or auto tags.

Using digikam 8.3.0, macOS Sonoma v14.5. Image collection is on an external USB-C drive, with the database files residing on the computer’s internal SSD.
