Choose date to use for "group selected by time"

No, the file date is not used. The database creation date is used and this
comes from the metadata of the images.
So check the creation date of the images in the digiKam properties sidebar or
in the thumbnail.
Due to an annoying bug in digiKam-8.4.0, in addition to non-imported rating
values, the creation and modification dates can also be affected. Read the
metadata of the images again manually, this will fix the problem. Fixed
digiKam-8.5.0 bundles will not be available until the end of August.
