I checked the documentation, https://docs.digikam.org/en/post_processing/metadata_editor.html.
It is apparently 2000 characters for EXIF and IPTC, but XMP does not have this limitation.

A side question, Pierre, if you don't mind. Is there a limit to the amount of text  that can be written to the CAPTION field and saved inside the image?

In digiKam there is no limitation with tags you can create. They can be hierarchical or as a list if that suits your needs. You can also choose if you want these Tags only in the Database or also saved inside image files (or in sidecars files for more special file formats).

Is there a way to save additional information such as item number, order number, year of manufacture, etc. in digikam for the images?

It would be enough if this information was just in the database.



I know this option in the ThumbsPlus software, which is unfortunately a bit outdated.
