Write metadata from sidecar to image file during export

Hello everyone,

Is there any way to write metadata into the image files directly, but only when exporting files?
I could not find any information on how to do that.

Background:
I've set up my system for backup-ability. That means all metadata is only ever written to sidecar files. I want the actual image files to not change at all. Otherwise the backup software would backup the whole 8MB image file again, just because I rated it with 3 stars.

Now, when I want to share some images with friends, I want all the metadata to be included in the image files themselves for maximum interoperability with whatever image management solution they use.

Any help or hint is appreciated.
