Can't run 7.9 or 7.10 AppImage on Ubuntu Lunar (23.04)

FYI, the issue below is gone in last night's 8.0.0 build AppImage, but I 
encountered some other issues with 8.0.0 which I will describe in a 
separate thread so as not to clutter things.
