Setup Problem - Specifying Root Folder - Ubuntu

I'm a new digiKam user and am having difficulty with the first screen of the setup wizard. I'm sure that solution is trivially simple, but extensive online searches have not revealed an answer.
The issue relates to the setup screen in which I'm asked to provide the root folder in which I store my photos. The photos are actually stored on /home/mike/Photos but I'm unable to navigate to, or enter that folder. If I enter it manually, it says that the folder doesn't exist and gives me the option of creating it. If I try to browse to it, it doesn't show the folder, in fact, of all the folders below /home/mike/, the only one it shows, and the only one it will accept if I enter it manually, is /home/mike/Pictures. I have, therefore, accepted that folder for now, but this is not ideal, and appears contrary to the information on the page, which suggests that it's possible to specify pretty much any folder on any drive.
Any pointers would be much appreciated.
