First you have to make sure that RT/ART/DT are recognized as 
applications in general.

For ART, I have the following desktop file:

~/.local/share/applications/ART.desktop

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Name=ART
Comment=
Icon=/path/to/ART-1.18.0-linux64/images/ART-logo-256.png
Exec=/path/to/Applications/ART-1.18.0-linux64/ART %f
Terminal=false
Categories=Graphics

To reload the desktop files:

$ update-desktop-database ~/.local/share/applications

Then restart Digikam to be sure, right click on a file, Open with... 
Other. In the dialog, you can choose to set the application as default.
