Updating mapped drive to network share

Hi all,
After returning to digiKam after a long hiatus, I see that collections can
be specified by their network paths. I vaguely recall that mapping network
share to a drive letter was previously the recommended or only supported
approach for network shares. Therefore, currently, my collection is
configured as a local collection with path Y:\Pictures.
1) Are mapped drives still the recommended approach?
2) Do network share collections allow the same collection to be accessed
(with associated database info) from different digiKam clients?
3) How could I change the configuration so that the collection is
recognised as a network share collection, both without duplicating the
image files (I don't have space), and without necessitating repopulating
the digiKam meta databases (such as faces)?
* DigiKam 8.2.0 (having just upgraded today from 7.6 or something like that)
* Windows 10 DigiKam client
* digikam Dbs on ubuntu machine on local network.
Kind regards,
Pete
