Safe to delete .dtrash folders outside of digikam

I just read through the linked documentation. Maybe I missed it, but I 
was not able to find an answer to the question of whether it is safe to 
delete the .trash folder from outside of Digikam.

I /think/ it is safe to do so, however, I have also wondered about it 
and have not done it since I fear ending up with some orphan references 
in the DK database, etc.

I would like clarification too.
