[digiKam-users] Changes in the label type Pick or Color are not immediately recognized by filters

I asked a similar question 1.5 years ago
(https://mail.kde.org/pipermail/digikam-users/2020-August/031169.html),
and got got some suggested workarounds.  When I learned that it worked
for star ratings but not for pick labels and colors, my guess was that
it was an accident (or bug) the the behavior was missing, but I never
got a definitive answer about whether the behavior is intentional or not.

I agree with you that it would be great if images immediately
disappeared from view when their pick label or color change to a value
excluded by the filters.  In fact, this is the top issue preventing me
from switching to digikam (from Lightroom) as my image management software.

Since I've had a long career as a software developer (although I'm not
familiar with KDE and the QT), I was thinking I would like to contribute
to digikam development, so I spent some time in late 2021 creating an
environment to build digikam locally.  I then tried to read the code and
trace through it in the debugger to figure out why/how images
immediately disappear when their star rating changes, with the hope that
I could make it also work for pick labels and colors.  I did get some
understanding of the behavior, and saw some differences between the star
rating and pick label code that looked like it might explain the
difference in behavior, but I didn't get the pick label code working.
Unfortunately other things took priority, so I haven't worked on it in
2022.  I'm hoping to get back to it later this year, but there have been
two releases (7.5.0 and 7.6.0) since then that include major changes, so
I'll probably have to start from scratch.
