[digiKam-users] DigiKam in Windows not recognizing cameras

Well I appreciate all the work going into it. If it were up to me I'd be on Ubuntu pretty much full time (dual boot), but since this is a family computer it's booted into Windows most of the time, and that's how the family will most likely be looking at photos. And even though DigiKam doesn't run nearly as smoothly in Windows than in Linux, there really isn't a free Windows app anywhere that comes close.

On a related note, I just realized that the problem I was having with those videos I imported earlier seem to be more related to DigiKam on Windows than it has to do with the Windows app I used to import them. It seems like the videos imported ok, but DigiKam (Windows) isn't sorting the album properly when I choose Sort Items By > Creation Date. In the thumbnail view those videos also aren't showing the correct "Camera Creation Date" in Windows. Those exact same files sort properly when I view them in DigiKam (Ubuntu), and also show the proper "Camera Creation Date".

When I look at the file's metadata, the correct date appears pretty much everywhere in both Windows and Linux. I see it popping up in the Exif tab, the XMP tab, and several sections of the ExifTool tab. The wrong date appears only in a couple fields in the ExifTool tab, specifically File > File Access Date, and File > File Create Date (though in Ubuntu it seems to go under a different name... File Inode Change Date). The difference is that DigiKam (Ubuntu) is properly ignoring those fields when sorting and displaying metadata in the thumbnail view. On DigiKam (Windows) it's apparently trying to use those fields. For the record, these videos are MP4 videos taken from my smartphone.

Hi,

Supporting Gphoto2 driver under windows is problematic as it needs a replacement of the usb driver in the OS. Even if it works I'm not sure that it will be the best solution.

In fact Windows provides a camera driver de facto (PTP and UMS as Gphoto2), but we don't have code to dialog with this native API.
Also by experience, the Windows API changes reguliary and breaks all at each major Windows version. So using the gphoto2 API will be better, but we have the USB driver problem...

Well, nothing is perfect.

Best
