Dear Shel,
I meant to respond to a different thread that had a post next to yours in
the date order. I apologize for the confusion. I should stop posting after
midnight. But perhaps I can help with your problem. I have gained some
knowledge about the config and database files by working on a portable
Windows version of digiKam.
Try this:
Rename digikamrc to something such as dkrc_library1.
Run digikam.exe. With no file named digikamrc, hopefully you will be
presented with the First Run Dialog. You will be asked where to store the
database files. Specify a different folder or drive than you used for your
original library of photos. Exit digiKam. There should be a newly minted
digikamrc file, which you will rename to something such as dkrc_library2.
In short, you will have two config files, each of which will point to a
different set of database files.
When running digiKam, you will specify the config file that corresponds to
the desired library. This can be done with Windows shortcuts, but it is
easier to illustrate with the start command:
start "digiKam" digikam.exe --config dkrc_library1
start "digiKam" digikam.exe --config dkrc_library2
