I don't know if I am missing something, but I think the easiest solution
overall is to have a local copy of your pictures in your laptop, and
regularly sync them. And keep a local copy of the database (it will update
itself when changes to the library are detected anyway).
Then, when you are home (or somewhere where you can access your network),
use a software to sync the libraries (I use Unison, it's based on rsync),
and call it a day. I did that a couple years ago to keep a local copy of my
pictures in my laptop so managing them would be faster, and each night I
sync'd the changes (bidirectionally). It worked quite well.
